Description
For sample adults in 2002 who have seen a practitioner for acupuncture during the past 12 months (ACUYR), ACUINSURE indicates whether any of the costs of using acupuncture were covered by insurance.
The 2002 and 2007 NHIS included supplements covering a range of alternative health practices (see ACUYR). Although information about insurance coverage of acupuncture is only available for 2002, data on the average out-of-pocket cost (in dollars) per visit to an acupuncture practitioner is available for 2007 (ACUPAID).
Along with collecting information on insurance coverage for acupuncture, the 2002 survey asked whether any of the costs of respondents' use of the following alternative treatment modalities was covered by insurance:
- ayurveda (AYUINSURE)
- biofeedback (BIOINSURE)
- chelation (CHEINSURE)
- chiropractic care (COMINSURE)
- energy healing therapy (EHTINSURE)
- folk medicine (FOKINSURE)
- hypnosis (HYPINSURE)
- massage (MASINSURE)
- naturopathy (NATINSURE)
Analysts interested in further information about a respondent's health insurance coverage may wish to consult the variable UNINSURED, which indicates whether the respondent has insurance and provides links to additional variables indicating the respondent's type of health insurance.
