Description
For sample adults who had seen a practitioner for acupuncture during the past 12 months (ACUYR) and who had used acupuncture for a specific health problem (ACUTREAT), ACUPMED identifies those who had also received prescription medications for the condition for which they most used acupuncture (ACUTCONMOST).
For persons who had received such prescription medication (i.e., those with a "yes" response in ACUPMED), the complementary variable ACUPMEDTIM indicates whether they received such prescription medications before, at about the same time, or after trying acupuncture.
The survey question for ACUPMED also collected information about the use of other conventional medical treatments (or no conventional treatment) for the condition for which acupuncture was used the most, including:
- Mental health counseling (ACUCOUN)
- Over-the-counter medications (ACUNPMED)
- Surgery (ACUSURG)
- Physical therapy (ACUPT)
- No conventional treatment (ACUNOCONV)
Interviewers asked, "Did you receive any of these conventional medical treatments for [condition for which acupuncture was used the most]?" and entered all treatments reported by the respondent.
For more information about the full range of variables related to acupuncture, including definitions, see ACUYR.
