Description
ACUSMEDFAIL indicates whether sample adults had used acupuncture because "conventional medical treatments would not help you" (2002) or "because medical treatments did not help" (2007). Only sample adults who had seen a practitioner for acupuncture during the past 12 months (ACUYR) and, in 2002, had used acupuncture for a specific health problem or condition (ACUTREAT) were asked their reasons for using acupuncture.
Other reasons for using acupuncture that were recorded by the survey, and the associated IHIS variables, are:
- ACUSCOMBO (Helps combined w. conventional med)
- ACUSENERGY (Enhanced energy)
- ACUSWELL (General wellness)
- ACUSHCREC (Health care provider recommended)
- ACUSMEDCOST (Medical treatment expensive)
- ACUSINTER (Interesting to try)
- ACUSIMMUN (Improved immune function)
- ACUSRELREC (Family or friends recommended)
For information about the full range of variables related to acupuncture, including definitions, see ACUYR.
