ALC1YR
Ever had 12+ drinks in any one year

Description

ALC1YR indicates whether sample adults had at least twelve drinks of any type of alcoholic beverage in any one year. Directly prior to this question, interviewers stated, "These next question are about drinking alcoholic beverages. Included are liquor such as whiskey or gin, beer, wine, wine coolers, and any other type of alcoholic beverage."

The ALC1YR question functioned largely as a filter for further questioning about alcoholic consumption during the past year. If sample adults gave a positive response, they were asked about the frequency and amount of their drinking in the previous twelve months (ALCAMT). If they gave a negative response, they were asked about having consumed 12 or more drinks in their entire lives (ALCLIFE) and, if yes, then asked about their drinking during the past year.
