ASTHCHEN
Ever advised to change environment for asthma

Description

For sample adults and sample children who still have asthma (ASTHMASTIL) or who had an asthma episode/attack in the past 12 months (ASTHATAKYR), ASTHCHEN indicates whether a doctor or other health professional had ever advised them (or, in the case of sample children, had ever advised an adult family member on their behalf) to change things in their home, school, or work to improve their asthma. Response categories on the survey form included "yes," "no," and "was told no changes needed."

In 2003 only, those responding "yes" to ASTHCHEN were asked a follow-up question about how much of this advice they had followed (ASTHCHENYES). Interviewers asked, "How much of this advice did you follow? Would you say none, a little, some, most, or all?"

Other asthma-related questions were periodically included in the survey; see ASTHMAEV for a summary of these variables currently in the IHIS.
