Description
For sample adults and sample children who still have asthma (ASTHMASTIL) or who had an asthma episode/attack in the past 12 months (ASTHATAKYR), ASTHRESPOND indicates whether a doctor or health professional had ever taught them (or, for sample children, had ever taught their parent or guardian) how to respond to episodes of asthma.
The 2003 survey contained several other questions dealing with various aspects of asthma patient education. These covered whether persons with asthma had taken classes in asthma management (ASTHCLASS), whether they had been given an asthma management plan by a doctor or other health professional (ASTHPLAN), and whether they had received professional advice on long-term management of their asthma (ASTHMANAGE), on how to monitor peak flow for daily therapy (ASTHPEAK), on how to use an inhaler (ASTHINSHOW), on recognizing early signs of an asthma episode (ASTHSIGNS), and on changing things at home, school, or work to improve their asthma (ASTHCHEN).
For a full list of asthma-related variables currently in the IHIS, see
