Description

For sample adults who had seen a practitioner for biofeedback during the past 12 months (BIOYR) and who had used biofeedback for a specific health problem (BIOTREAT), BIOCOUN identifies those who had also received counseling for the condition for which they most used biofeedback (BIOTCONMOST).

For persons who had received such counseling (i.e., those with a "yes" response in BIOCOUN), the complementary variable BIOCOUNTIM indicates whether they received such mental health counseling before, at about the same time, or after trying biofeedback.

The survey question for BIOCOUN also collected information about the use of other conventional medical treatments (or no conventional treatment) for the condition for which biofeedback was used the most, including:

• Prescription medications (BIOPMED)

• Over-the-counter medications (BIONPMED)

• Surgery (BIOSURG)

• Physical therapy (BIOPT)

• No conventional treatment (BIONOCONV)

Interviewers asked, "Did you receive any of these conventional medical treatments for [condition for which biofeedback was used the most]?" and entered all treatments reported by the respondent.
