Description

For sample adults who had seen a practitioner for biofeedback during the past 12 months (BIOYR) and who had used biofeedback for a specific health problem (BIOTREAT), BIOPT identifies those who had also received physical therapy for the condition for which they most used biofeedback (BIOTCONMOST).

For persons who had received such physical therapy (i.e., those with a "yes" response in BIOPT), the complementary variable BIOPTTIM indicates whether they received such physical therapy before, at about the same time, or after trying biofeedback.

The survey question for BIOPT also collected information about the use of other conventional medical treatments (or no conventional treatment) for the condition for which biofeedback was used the most, including:

• Mental health counseling (BIOCOUN)

• Prescription medications (BIOPMED)

• Over-the-counter medications (BIONPMED)

• Surgery (BIOSURG)

• No conventional treatment (BIONOCONV)

Interviewers asked, "Did you receive any of these conventional medical treatments for [condition for which biofeedback was used the most]?" and entered all treatments reported by the respondent.
