Ever told have cataracts

Description

CATARACTEV identifies sample adults whom a doctor or other health professional ever diagnosed as having cataracts. In 2002, those who had ever been diagnosed with cataracts were asked whether they had cataracts during the past 12 months CATARACTYR.

The Field Representative's Manual for 2002 defined cataracts as "the clouding of the lenses which causes a general loss of detail. This may cause problems with glare or distortion, such as double images." This definition was not routinely shared with respondents.

Comparability

This variable is comparable for 1999 and 2002.

Universe

  • 1976: All persons.
  • 1989: Persons age 18+ who have ever been told by a doctor they had diabetes other than during pregnancy.
  • 1991: Sample persons age 18+.
  • 2002; 2008: Sample adults age 18+.
