Description

For persons age 18+ who have at least one activity limitation (LANY), and for whom an "other injury" (non-fracture/bone/joint injury) was reported as a condition causing any activity limitation (CLIMOTHINJ), CLIMOTHINJTP reports the time unit in which the duration of the other injury was measured by the respondent.

In 1997-2003, data on the duration of the limiting other injury were collected via the question, "How long [have/has] [you/person] had [an 'other injury']?" In 2004 forward, the question wording changed slightly, with interviewers asking, "How long [have you/has person] had the other injury that caused [your/his/her] limitation?" In both time periods, respondents could answer the question using the time unit of their choice (i.e., days, weeks, months, or years). The original responses to these questions are reported in two complementary variables, CLIMOTHINJTP (which, as noted above, specifies the time unit) and CLIMOTHINJNO (which reports the number of such units). For the NHIS public use files, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) recoded the results from these two variables to create two other variables using standard time units: years (CLIMOTHINJY) and groups of months (CLIMOTHINJMO).

Comparability

The variable is comparable across time.

As noted above, there were slight differences in the wording of the question associated with CLIMOTHINJTP between 1997-2003 and 2004 forward; however, the substantive meaning of the two questions remained the same.
