COMPMED
Got prescription meds for chiropractor condition

Description

For sample adults who had seen a practitioner for chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation during the past 12 months (COMYR) and who had used chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation for a specific health problem (COMTREAT), COMPMED identifies those who had also received prescription medications for the condition for which they most used chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation (COMTCONMOST).

For persons who had received such prescription medication (i.e., those with a "yes" response in COMPMED), the complementary variable COMPMEDTIM indicates whether they received such prescription medications before, at about the same time, or after trying chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation.

The survey question for COMPMED also collected information about the use of other conventional medical treatments (or no conventional treatment) for the condition for which chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation was used the most, including:

  • Mental health counseling (COMCOUN)
  • Over-the-counter medications (COMNPMED)
  • Physical therapy (COMPT)

Interviewers asked, "Did you receive any of these conventional medical treatments for [condition for which chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation was used the most]?" and entered all treatments reported by the respondent.

For more information about the full range of variables related to chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation, including definitions, see COMYR.
