Description

For sample adults who had seen a practitioner for chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation during the past 12 months (COMYR) and who had used chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation for a specific health problem (COMTREAT), COMSURG identifies those who had also received surgery for the condition for which they most used chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation (COMTCONMOST).

For persons who had received such surgery (i.e., those with a "yes" response in COMSURG), the complementary variable COMSURGTIM indicates whether they received such surgery before, at about the same time, or after trying chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation.

The survey question for COMSURG also collected information about the use of other conventional medical treatments (or no conventional treatment) for the condition for which chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation was used the most, including:

• Mental health counseling (COMCOUN)

• Prescription medications (COMPMED)

• Over-the-counter medications (COMNPMED)

• Physical therapy (COMPT)

• No conventional treatment (COMNOCONV)

Interviewers asked, "Did you receive any of these conventional medical treatments for [condition for which chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation was used the most]?" and entered all treatments reported by the respondent.
