COMYR
Saw chiropractor, past 12 months

Description

For sample adults who had ever seen a practitioner for chiropractic care (2002 only) or for chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation (2007 only) (COMEV) and for sample children in 2007, COMYR reports whether the person had used chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation in the past 12 months.

Chiropractic and osteopathic manipulation were one of many alternative health treatment modalities included in the 2002 and 2007 Alternative Health Supplements. For the full list of alternative health treatments covered in the NHIS, and for general background information about the Alternative Health Supplements, see ACUYR.

Definitions

The 2002 Field Representativ's Manual says that chiropractic care involves:

the adjustment of the spine and joints to influence the body's nervous system and natural defense mechanisms in order to alleviate pain and improve general health. It is primarily used to treat back problems, headaches, nerve inflammation, muscle spasms, and other injuries and traumas.

This definition was not routinely shared with respondents.

The 2007 Field Representative's Manual provides a similar definition:

Chiropractic (kye-row-PRAK-tik) manipulation is a form of health care that focuses on the relationship between the body's structure, primarily of the spine, and function. Doctors of chiropractic, who are also called chiropractors or chiropractic physicians, use a type of hands-on therapy called manipulation (or adjustment) as their core clinical procedure.

The 2007 manual defines osteopathic manipulation as:

a full-body system of hands-on techniques to alleviate pain, restore function, and promote health and well-being.

In 2007 field representatives were advised to "feel free to offer [these definitions] even if the respondent has not requested [them]."

The 2002 and 2007 survey questions asked whether the person had seen "a practitioner" (for sample adults) or "a provider or practitioner" (for sample children) for "chiropractic care" (2002) or for "chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation" (2007) in the past 12 months. The 2007 Manual defines an "alternative provider or practitioner" as:

someone who is knowledgeable about a specific alternative health practice. This person provides care or gives advice about its use, and usually receives payment for his or her services.

Related Variables

In 2002 and 2007, sample adults with a positive response in COMYR were asked a series of other questions about the following topics: frequency of using chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation; the out-of-pocket cost of the treatment; whether chiropractic or osteopathic was used to treat a specific medical condition, and, if so, what that condition was (this information was also obtained for sample children in 2007); any conventional medical treatments received and the timing of the conventional treatment relative to the chiropractic or osteopathic treatment; the reasons for using chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation; and the disclosure of the use of chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation to conventional medical professionals.

Respondents who indicated that they had ever used chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation (COMEV) (in the case of sample adults) and that they had used it in the last 12 months (COMYR) (both sample adults and sample children) were asked follow-up questions about their use of chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation. Most of the following variables relate only to sample adults, except for COMTREAT and some variables covering specific health conditions.

  • importance of use of chiropractor (COMIMPORT)
  • times saw practitioner for chiropractic manipulation (COMNO)
  • amount paid per visit for chiropractic manipulation (COMPAID)
  • whether chiropractor costs covered by insurance (COMINSURE)
  • whether used chiropractor for specific health problem (COMTREAT)
  • whether needed medical attention for chiropractor side effects (COMSIDEMED)

Persons who indicated in COMTREAT that they had used chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation in the past 12 months to treat a specific health problem were asked to specify the condition treated. There are 131 total variables for specific conditions that were treated by chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation, including 72 for sample adults, 28 for sample children, and 31 for both sample adults and sample children. See COMTREAT for more detail and the full list of conditions that persons could indicate were treated with chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation. Analysts interested in the conditions that chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation was used to treat may also wish to consult the following variables:

  • condition for which chiropractor was used most (COMTCONMOST)

  • first condition for which chiropractor was used (COMCON1)
  • degree of help from chiropractor, 1st condition (COMCON1HELP)
  • second condition for which chiropractor was used (COMCON2)
  • degree of help from chiropractor, 2nd condition (COMCON2HELP)
  • third condition for which chiropractor was used (COMCON3)
  • degree of help from chiropractor, 3rd condition (COMCON3HELP)
  • condition count for chiropractor (COMCONNO)

Respondents who had ever used chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation but had not used it in the past 12 months were asked to provide a reason why they had not used it. The reasons included:

  • health care worker said not toCOMNOHC

Persons who had never used chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation (i.e., with a negative response in COMYR and/or COMEV) were asked why they had never used the treatment. The reasons included:

  • health care worker said not to COMNEVHC

Comparability

The types of alternative medicine covered by COMYR expanded over time.

The 2002 sample adult questionnaire asked, "During the past 12 months, did you see a practitioner for chiropractic care?"

By contrast, the 2007 sample adult questionnaire asked, "During the past 12 months, did you see a practitioner for chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation?"

The 2007 sample child questionnaire asked, "During the past 12 months, did [fill: sample child's name] see a provider or practitioner for any of the following therapies? Please say yes or no to each. ... Chiropractic (kye-row-PRAK-tik) or Osteopathic Manipulation?"

Researchers should therefore exercise caution when conducting analyses that include "COM" variables from both 2002 and 2007.

  • 2007: Sample adults age 18+ who have ever seen a practitioner for chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation and sample children under 18 .
