Description

For sample adults who had used a special diet during the past 12 months (DITATKINYR, DITMACYR, DITORNYR, DITPRITYR, DITSBYR, DITVEGYR, or DITZONYR) and who had used a special diet for a specific health problem (DITTREAT), DITNPMED identifies those who had also taken over-the-counter medications for the condition for which they most used a special diet (DITTCONMOST).

For persons who had taken such over-the-counter medications (i.e., those with a "yes" response in DITNPMED), the complementary variable DITNPMEDTIM indicates whether they took such non-prescription medications before, at about the same time, or after trying a special diet.

The survey question for DITNPMED also collected information about the use of other conventional medical treatments (or no conventional treatment) for the condition for which the special diet was used the most, including:

• Mental health counseling (DITCOUN)

• Prescription medications (DITPMED)

• Surgery (DITSURG)

• Physical therapy (DITPT)

• No conventional treatment (DITNOCONV)

Interviewers asked, "Did you receive any of these conventional medical treatments for [condition for which the special diet was used the most]?" and entered all treatments reported by the respondent.
