Description

For sample adults who had used a special diet during the past 12 months (DITATKINYR, DITMACYR, DITORNYR, DITPRITYR, DITSBYR, DITVEGYR, or DITZONYR) and who had used a special diet for a specific health problem (DITTREAT), DITPMED identifies those who had also received prescription medications for the condition for which they most used the special diet (DITTCONMOST).

For persons who had received such prescription medication (i.e., those with a "yes" response in DITPMED), the complementary variable DITPMEDTIM indicates whether they received such prescription medications before, at about the same time, or after trying a special diet.

The survey question for DITPMED also collected information about the use of other conventional medical treatments (or no conventional treatment) for the condition for which the special diet was used the most, including:

• Mental health counseling (DITCOUN)

• Over-the-counter medications (DITNPMED)

• Surgery (DITSURG)

• Physical therapy (DITPT)

• No conventional treatment (DITNOCONV)

Interviewers asked, "Did you receive any of these conventional medical treatments for [condition for which the special diet was used the most]?" and entered all treatments reported by the respondent.
