Description

For sample adults who had used a special diet during the past 12 months (DITATKINYR, DITMACYR, DITORNYR, DITPRITYR, DITSBYR, DITVEGYR, or DITZONYR) and who had used the special diet for a specific health problem (DITTREAT), DITPT identifies those who had also received physical therapy for the condition for which they most used the special diet (DITTCONMOST).

For persons who had received such physical therapy (i.e., those with a "yes" response in DITPT), the complementary variable DITPTTIM indicates whether they received such physical therapy before, at about the same time, or after trying the special diet.

The survey question for DITPT also collected information about the use of other conventional medical treatments (or no conventional treatment) for the condition for which the special diet was used the most, including:

• Mental health counseling (DITCOUN)

• Prescription medications (DITPMED)

• Over-the-counter medications (DITNPMED)

• Surgery (DITSURG)

• No conventional treatment (DITNOCONV)

Interviewers asked, "Did you receive any of these conventional medical treatments for [condition for which the special diet was used the most]?" and entered all treatments reported by the respondent.
