Description

DITUSMEDFAIL indicates whether sample adults had used a special diet because "conventional medical treatments would not help you" (2002) or "because medical treatments did not help" (2007). In 2002, sample adults who had used a special diet for at least two weeks (DITATKINYR, DITMACYR, DITORNYR, DITPRITYR, DITVEGYR, or DITZONYR) to treat a specific health problem or condition during the past year (DITTREAT) were asked their reasons for using the diet. In 2007, sample adults who had used a special diet during the past 12 months were asked their reasons for using the diet.

Other reasons for using a special diet that were recorded by the survey, and the associated IHIS variables, are:

Comparability

Apart from the change in universe and the slight difference in question wording noted above, DITUSMEDFAIL is comparable between 2002 and 2007.
