Description

For sample adults who had seen a practitioner for energy healing therapy during the past 12 months (EHTYR) and who had used energy healing therapy for a specific health problem (EHTTREAT), EHTPMED identifies those who had also received prescription medications for the condition for which they most used energy healing therapy (EHTTCONMOST).

For persons who had received such prescription medication (i.e., those with a "yes" response in EHTPMED), the complementary variable EHTPMEDTIM indicates whether they received such prescription medications before, at about the same time, or after trying energy healing therapy.

The survey question for EHTPMED also collected information about the use of other conventional medical treatments (or no conventional treatment) for the condition for which energy healing therapy was used the most, including:

• Mental health counseling (EHTCOUN)

• Over-the-counter medications (EHTNPMED)

• Surgery (EHTSURG)

• Physical therapy (EHTPT)

• No conventional treatment (EHTNOCONV)

Interviewers asked, "Did you receive any of these conventional medical treatments for [condition for which energy healing therapy was used the most]?" and entered all treatments reported by the respondent.
