EHTTREAT
Used energy healing for specific health problem

Description

For sample adults age 18+ in 2002 and 2007, and sample children under 18 in 2007, who had seen a practitioner for energy healing therapy during the past 12 months (EHTYR), EHTTREAT indicates whether energy healing therapy was used to treat a specific health problem or condition.

This variable is part of the Alternative Health Supplements sponsored by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) and the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS). For information on the purpose of these supplements, along with a list of all modalities of alternative medicine that respondents could report using, see ACUYR. For a discussion of related energy healing therapy use variables and definitions of energy healing, see EHTYR.

Related Variables

Respondents who indicated that they did in fact use energy healing to treat a specific health problem or condition were asked follow-up questions, including:

Respondents who indicated that they had used energy healing to treat a specific condition were also asked to identify that condition. There are 131 variables for specific conditions that respondents could indicate were treated with energy healing: 72 for adults only, 28 for children only, and 31 for both children and adults.

Sample adults only were able to indicate that they used energy healing to treat:

  • excessive use of alcohol or tobacco (EHTTALCTOB)
  • bowel problems and constipation (EHTTBOWL)
  • other nerve damage, including carpal tunnel syndrome (EHTTCTS)
  • joint pain or stiffness/other joint condition (EHTTJNTPAIN)
  • memory loss or loss of other cognitive function (EHTTMEMLOS)
  • missing limbs (fingers, toes or digits), amputee (EHTTMLIMB)
  • circulation problems (other than in the legs) (EHTTNLCIRC)
  • other heart condition or disease (EHTTOHART)
  • knee problems (not arthritis, not joint injury) (EHTTOKNEE)
  • polio (myelitis), paralysis, para/quadriplegia (EHTTPOLIO)
  • substance abuse, other than alcohol or tobacco (EHTTSUBST)
  • varicose veins, hemorrhoids (EHTTVEIN)

Sample children only were able to indicate that they used energy healing to treat:

Both sample adults and sample children were able to indicate that they used energy healing to treat:

  • Attention Deficit Disorder (EHTTADD)
  • constipation needing medication (EHTTCONST)
  • migraine or severe headache (EHTTMIG)
  • other developmental problem (EHTTODD)
  • other lung or breathing problem (EHTTOLUNG)

The aforementioned variables indicating which conditions respondents treated via energy healing provide a "yes" or "no" response for each condition. Analysts interested in the conditions that energy healing was used to treat may wish to consult the following summary variables, as well:

  • condition for which energy healing was used most (EHTTCONMOST)

  • first condition for which energy healing was used (EHTCON1)
  • degree of help from energy healing, 1st condition (EHTCON1HELP)
  • second condition for which energy healing was used (EHTCON2)
  • degree of help from energy healing, 2nd condition (EHTCON2HELP)
  • third condition for which energy healing was used (EHTCON3)
  • degree of help from energy healing, 3rd condition (EHTCON3HELP)
  • condition count for energy healing (EHTCONNO)

Comparability

The question wording of EHTTREAT for sample adults changed slightly from 2002 to 2007.

In 2002, they were asked, "Did you use energy healing therapy/Reiki to treat a specific health problem or condition?"

In 2007, they were asked, "Did you use energy healing therapy for a specific health problem or condition?"

The question wording for sample children emphasizes that the energy healing treatment must have occurred within the past 12 months.

For sample children, interviewers asked, "During the past 12 months, did [fill: sample child's name] use energy healing therapy for a specific health problem or condition?" However, two of the questions for sample adults preceding EHTTREAT in both 2002 and 2007 (EHTYR and EHTNO) did specify the 12 month time frame. Respondents were only asked the question for EHTTREAT if they indicated in EHTYR that they had seen a practitioner for energy healing during the past 12 months.

The term Reiki only appears in the question for 2002. The definition of energy healing provided by the Field Representative's Manual for that year (see EHTYR) presents it as a synonymous term for energy healing.
