EHTYR
Had energy healing, past 12 months

Description

For sample adults in 2002 and 2007 who had ever seen a practitioner for energy healing therapy (EHTEV) and for sample children in 2007, EHTYR reports whether the person person had used energy healing therapy in the past 12 months. In 1999, information about energy healing therapy use in the past 12 month was collected from all sample adults.

Energy healing therapy was one of many alternative health treatment modalities included in the 2002 and 2007 Alternative Health Supplements. For the full list of alternative health treatments covered in the NHIS, and for general background information about the Alternative Health Supplements, see ACUYR.

Definitions

The 1999 Field Representative's Manual defines energy healing as:

when someone else stimulates your body's energy fields without touching you.

This definition was not routinely shared with respondents.

In later years the definitions were more expansive. The 2002 Field Representative's Manual says that "energy healing/Reiki" is:

a method for facilitating the body's ability to heal itself through the flow and focusing of healing energy (Reiki itself means universal healing energy). During treatment, this healing energy, often considered to be of divine origin, is channeled through the hands of a practitioner into the client's body to restore a normal energy balance and, therefore, health. Energy healing therapy has been used to treat a wide variety of ailments and health problems, and is often used in conjunction with other alternative and conventional medical treatments.

This definition was not routinely shared with respondents.

The 2007 Field Representative's Manual provides a similar definition:

Energy Healing Therapy involves the channeling of healing energy through the hands of a practitioner into the client's body to restore a normal energy balance and, therefore, health. Energy healing therapy has been used to treat a wide variety of ailments and health problems, and is often used in conjunction with other alternative and conventional treatments.

In 2007 field representatives were advised to "feel free to offer [this definition] even if the respondent has not requested [it]."

The 2002 and 2007 survey questions asked whether the person had seen "a practitioner" (for sample adults) or "a provider or practitioner" (for sample children) for energy healing therapy in the past 12 months. The 2007 Manual defines an "alternative provider or practitioner" as:

someone who is knowledgeable about a specific alternative health practice. This person provides care or gives advice about its use, and usually receives payment for his or her services.

Related Variables

In 2002 and 2007, sample adults with a positive response in EHTYR were asked a series of other questions (described below) about the following topics: frequency of using energy healing; the out-of-pocket cost of the treatment; whether energy healing was used to treat a specific medical condition, and, if so, what that condition was (this information was also obtained for sample children in 2007); any conventional medical treatments received and the timing of the conventional treatment relative to the energy healing treatment; the reasons for using energy healing, and the disclosure of the use of energy healing to conventional medical professionals.

Respondents who indicated that they had ever used energy healing (EHTEV) (in the case of sample adults) and that they had used it in the past 12 months (EHTYR) (both sample adults and sample children) were asked follow-up questions about their use of energy healing. Most of the following variables relate only to sample adults, except for EHTTREAT and some variables covering specific health conditions.

  • importance of use of energy healing (EHTIMPORT)
  • times saw practitioner for energy healing (EHTNO)
  • amount paid per visit for energy healing (EHTPAID)
  • whether energy healing costs covered by insurance (EHTINSURE)
  • whether used energy healing for specific health problem (EHTTREAT)

Persons who indicated in EHTTREAT that they had used energy healing therapy in the past 12 months to treat a specific health problem were asked to specify the condition treated. There are 131 total variables for specific conditions that were treated by energy healing, including 72 for sample adults, 28 for sample children, and 31 for both sample adults and sample children. See EHTTREAT for more detail and the full list of conditions that persons could indicate were treated with energy healing. Analysts interested in the conditions that energy healing was used to treat may also wish to consult the following variables:

  • condition for which energy healing was used most (EHTTCONMOST)

  • first condition for which energy healing was used (EHTCON1)
  • degree of help from energy healing, 1st condition (EHTCON1HELP)
  • second condition for which energy healing was used (EHTCON2)
  • degree of help from energy healing, 2nd condition (EHTCON2HELP)
  • third condition for which energy healing was used (EHTCON3)
  • degree of help from energy healing, 3rd condition (EHTCON3HELP)
  • condition count for energy healing (EHTCONNO)

Comparability

There is a slight change in the wording of the question associated with EHTYR between the 1999 and the 2002/2007 questionnaires, with the latter referring to the use of a practitioner to receive energy healing treatment.

In 1999 the question read, "During the past 12 months have you used energy healing?"

In the 2002 sample adult questionnaire, the question read, "During the past 12 months, did you see a practitioner for energy healing therapy/Reiki?"
The 2007 sample adult questionnaire asked, "During the past 12 months, did you see a practitioner for energy healing therapy?"

The 2007 sample child questionnaire asked, "During the past 12 months, did [fill: sample child's name] see a provider or practitioner for any of the following therapies? Please say yes or no to each. ... Energy Healing Therapy?"

Thus, the later versions of EHTYR emphasize the use of an energy healing practitioner, an emphasis that is not found in the 1999 question. However, the 1999 definition of energy healing (see above) points out the role of "someone else" in providing the treatment, and the definitions from the Field Representative's Manuals for 2002 and 2007 make explicit mention of a practitioner.

The term Reiki only appears in the question for 2002. The definition for that year (see above) presents it as a synonymous term for energy healing.
