FSQGUM2YR
Former smoker: Used nicotine gum to quit completely w/in 2 yrs

Description

PRELIMINARY VARIABLE: Variable description not yet updated.

For sample adults, FSQGUM2YR indicates whether the respondent had used either a nicotine gum (2005 and 2010) or a nicotine lozenge (2010) to quit smoking completely during the past two years.

Respondents had to satisfy three conditions to receive the question associated with FSQGUM2YR (i.e., "Thinking back to when you stopped smoking completely, did you use ANY of the following [PRODUCTS]?").

First, they had to have smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their entire lives (SMOKEV). Second, they had to have a negative response to the question of whether they currently smoked cigarettes every day or some days (SMOKFREQNOW). Third, they had to have quit smoking completely during the past two years, as determined by their answers to how long it had been since they quit smoking (QUITNO), and the time period, in days, weeks, months or years, since they quit smoking (QUITTP).

FSQGUM2YR is one of a series of related variables in the "Tobacco" section of the 2005 and 2010 Cancer Module.

The 2005 Field Representative's Manual explains the rationale for this supplement as follows:

"[T]obacco use is the major risk factor in the development of lung cancer and oral cancer, and contributes to the development of several other cancers and diseases ... [Because of this, answers to questions about cigarette smoking] will be compared with data from 1992 to assess trends in starting and stopping cigarette smoking, and to target quit smoking programs by age, race and sex. The information on behavior and attitudes can be used to assess the effectiveness of current quit smoking campaigns and to help to develop new ones. They will also contribute follow up information to use in evaluating the effectiveness of the 'ASSIST' program, and will be useful in future planning."

Related Variables for "Quitting Smoking"

2005 and 2010
Besides using "a nicotine gum" (FSQGUM2YR), there were a number of other methods that former smokers could report in answer to the question " Thinking back to when you stopped smoking completely, did you use ANY of the following [PRODUCTS]?" For a full list of those methods, see the entries under 2005 and 2010 in FSQBOOK2YR.
2000
Questions about methods used to quit smoking completely were also asked in 2000, though there were important differences between the 2005/2010 and 2000 questions. For a full list of the 2000 questions and the ways that they differ from the 2005/2010 questions, see the entries under 2000 in FSQBOOKEV.

Comparability

The wording of the survey question associated with FSQGUM2YR changed between 2005 and 2010. In 2005, respondents were asked if they had used nicotine gum. In 2010, respondents were asked if they had used either nicotine gum or lozenges. For both years, the responses are reported as "Mentioned" or "Not mentioned," so for 2010 there is no way to know which product (gum or lozenges) a respondent had used.

For 2005, respondents could report the use of nicotine lozenges, but for that year, those responses are reported in the variable FSQOTMEDS2YR. However, for 2005, FSQOTMEDS2YR includes not only lozenges, but also nasal spray, inhalers, and tablets.

For analysts wishing to use data from both 2005 and 2010, responses for FSQGUM2YR should be combined with responses for FSQOTMEDS2YR to achieve maximum comparability.
