Description

For sample adults who had used homeopathic treatment during the past 12 months (HOMYR) and who had used homeopathic treatment for a specific health problem (HOMTREAT), HOMCOUN identifies those who had also received counseling for the condition for which they most used homeopathic treatment (HOMTCONMOST).

For persons who had received such counseling (i.e., those with a "yes" response in HOMCOUN), the complementary variable HOMCOUNTIM indicates whether they received such mental health counseling before, at about the same time, or after trying homeopathic treatment.

The survey question for HOMCOUN also collected information about the use of other conventional medical treatments (or no conventional treatment) for the condition for which homeopathic treatment was used the most, including:

• Prescription medications (HOMPMED)

• Over-the-counter medications (HOMNPMED)

• Surgery (HOMSURG)

• Physical therapy (HOMPT)

• No conventional treatment (HOMNOCONV)

Interviewers asked, "Did you receive any of these conventional medical treatments for [condition for which homeopathic treatment was used the most]?" and entered all treatments reported by the respondent.
