Description

HOMECAREYR identifies sample adults and sample children who received care at home from a nurse or other health care professional during the past 12 months.

Persons who responded affirmatively to HOMECAREYR were asked two follow-up questions about how many of the past 12 months they received home care (HOMECAREMO) and the total number of home visits received during those months (HOMECARENO).

Definitions of Home Care 

The Field Representative's Manual for 1997-1998 provided the following definition of "at home" in reference to care received at home:

AT HOME refers to the [sample adult's/child's] own home and everyone else's home in which the [sample adult/child] was staying at the time. This could be a house, apartment, motor home, houseboat, trailer, or other dwelling. Do not include visits by a doctor while the [sample person/child] was in a hospital or institutionalized [institution].

The Manuals for 1999 forward repeated this definition, with the following slight change in wording in the first sentence:

AT HOME refers to the [sample adult's/child's] own home and anyone else's home, like the home of family friends or relatives, a hotel, or any other place in which the [sample adult/child] was staying at the time of the health care professional's visit.

In conjunction with a different question about needing but not receiving home health care, the Manual for 2001 also provided the following additional definition of home health care:

Home health care consists of medical or personal care services provided in the individual's home. The services that home care agencies provide may be fairly simple, ranging from monitoring blood pressure to coordinating medication, to the highly complex, such as intravenous infusion therapy or care for AIDS patients. Home health agencies can also provide personal care, which includes such functions as bathing or housekeeping, to maintain a person in his or her own home.
