HOMTREAT
Used homeopathic treatment for specific health problem

Description

For sample adults age 18+ in 2002 and 2007, and sample children under 18 in 2007, who had used homeopathic treatment during the past 12 months (HOMYR), HOMTREAT indicates whether homeopathic treatment was used to treat a specific health problem or condition.

This variable is part of the Alternative Health Supplements sponsored by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) and the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS). For information on the purpose of these supplements, along with a list of all modalities of alternative medicine that respondents could report using, see ACUYR. For a discussion of related homeopathic treatment use variables and definitions of homeopathic treatment, see HOMYR.

Related Variables

Respondents who indicated that they did in fact use homeopathic treatment to treat a specific health problem or condition were asked follow-up questions.

Comparability

The question wording of HOMTREAT for sample adults changed slightly from 2002 to 2007.

In 2002, they were asked, "Did you use homeopathic treatment to treat a specific health problem or condition?"

In 2007, they were asked, "Did you use homeopathic treatment for a specific health problem or condition?"

The question wording for sample children emphasizes that the homeopathic treatment must have occurred within the past 12 months.

For sample children, interviewers asked, "During the past 12 months, did [fill: sample child's name] use homeopathic treatment for a specific health problem or condition?" However, two of the questions for sample adults preceding HOMTREAT in both 2002 and 2007 (HOMYR and HOMNO) did specify the 12 month time frame. Respondents were only asked the question for HOMTREAT if they indicated in HOMYR that they had seen a practitioner for homeopathic treatment during the past 12 months.
