HOMUSMEDFAIL indicates whether sample adults had used homeopathic treatment because "conventional medical treatments would not help you" (2002) or "because medical treatments did not help" (2007). Only sample adults who had used homeopathic treatment during the past 12 months (HOMYR) and, in 2002, had used homeopathic treatment for a specific health problem or condition (HOMTREAT) were asked their reasons for using homeopathic treatment.

Other reasons for using homeopathic treatment that were recorded by the survey, and the associated IHIS variables, are:

• HOMUSENERGY (Enhanced energy)

• HOMUSWELL (General wellness)

• HOMUSHCREC (Health care provider recommended)

• HOMUSMEDCOST (Medical treatment expensive)

• HOMUSINTER (Interesting to try)

• HOMUSIMMUN (Improved immune function)

• HOMUSRELREC (Family or friends recommended)

Comparability
