Description

For sample adults who had seen a practitioner for hypnosis during the past 12 months (HYPYR) and who had used hypnosis for a specific health problem (HYPTREAT), HYPCOUN identifies those who had also received counseling for the condition for which they most used hypnosis (HYPTCONMOST).

For persons who had received such counseling (i.e., those with a "yes" response in HYPCOUN), the complementary variable HYPCOUNTIM indicates whether they received such mental health counseling before, at about the same time, or after trying hypnosis.

The survey question for HYPCOUN also collected information about the use of other conventional medical treatments (or no conventional treatment) for the condition for which hypnosis was used the most, including:

• Prescription medications (HYPPMED)

• Over-the-counter medications (HYPNPMED)

• Surgery (HYPSURG)

• Physical therapy (HYPPT)

• No conventional treatment (HYPNOCONV)

Interviewers asked, "Did you receive any of these conventional medical treatments for [condition for which hypnosis was used the most]?" and entered all treatments reported by the respondent.
