Description
For sample adults who had seen a practitioner for hypnosis during the past 12 months (HYPYR) and who had used hypnosis for a specific health problem (HYPTREAT), HYPPMED identifies those who had also received prescription medications for the condition for which they most used hypnosis (HYPTCONMOST).
For persons who had received such prescription medication (i.e., those with a "yes" response in HYPPMED), the complementary variable HYPPMEDTIM indicates whether they received such prescription medications before, at about the same time, or after trying hypnosis.
The survey question for HYPPMED also collected information about the use of other conventional medical treatments (or no conventional treatment) for the condition for which hypnosis was used the most, including:
- Mental health counseling (HYPCOUN)
- Over-the-counter medications (HYPNPMED)
- Surgery (HYPSURG)
- Physical therapy (HYPPT)
- No conventional treatment (HYPNOCONV)
Interviewers asked, "Did you receive any of these conventional medical treatments for [condition for which hypnosis was used the most]?" and entered all treatments reported by the respondent.
For more information about the full range of variables related to hypnosis, including definitions, see HYPYR.
