Description

For sample adults who had seen a practitioner for hypnosis during the past 12 months (HYPYR) and who had used hypnosis for a specific health problem (HYPTREAT), HYPPT identifies those who had also received physical therapy for the condition for which they most used hypnosis (HYPTCONMOST).

For persons who had received such physical therapy (i.e., those with a "yes" response in HYPPT), the complementary variable HYPPTTIM indicates whether they received such physical therapy before, at about the same time, or after trying hypnosis.

The survey question for HYPPT also collected information about the use of other conventional medical treatments (or no conventional treatment) for the condition for which hypnosis was used the most, including:

• Mental health counseling (HYPCOUN)

• Prescription medications (HYPPMED)

• Over-the-counter medications (HYPNPMED)

• Surgery (HYPSURG)

• No conventional treatment (HYPNOCONV)

Interviewers asked, "Did you receive any of these conventional medical treatments for [condition for which hypnosis was used the most]?" and entered all treatments reported by the respondent.
