HYPTREAT
Used hypnosis for specific health problem

Description

For sample adults age 18+ in 2007, and sample children under 18 in 2007, who had seen a practitioner for hypnosis during the past 12 months (HYPYR), HYPTREAT indicates whether hypnosis was used to treat a specific health problem or condition.

This variable is part of the Alternative Health Supplements sponsored by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) and the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS). For information on the purpose of these supplements, along with a list of all modalities of alternative medicine that respondents could report using, see ACUYR. For a discussion of related hypnosis use variables and definitions of hypnosis, see HYPYR.

Related Variables

Respondents who indicated that they did in fact use hypnosis to treat a specific health problem or condition were asked follow-up questions, regarding whether hypnosis was combined with conventional treatments.

These include:

  • got no conventional treatment for hypnosis condition (HYPNOCONV )
  • got counseling for hypnosis condition (HYPCOUN)
  • got non-prescription meds for hypnosis condition (HYPNPMED)
  • got prescription meds for hypnosis condition (HYPPMED)
  • got physical therapy for hypnosis condition (HYPPT)
  • got surgery for hypnosis condition (HYPSURG)

Respondents who indicated that they had used hypnosis to treat a specific condition were also asked to identify that condition. There are 116 variables for specific conditions that respondents could indicate were treated with hypnosis: 57 for adults only, 29 for children only, and 30 for both children and adults.

Sample adults only were able to indicate that they used hypnosis to treat:

  • excessive use of alcohol or tobacco (HYPTALCTOB)
  • other nerve damage, including carpal tunnel syndrome (HYPTCTS)
  • joint pain or stiffness/other joint condition (HYPTJNTPAIN)
  • memory loss or loss of other cognitive function (HYPTMEMLOS)
  • missing limbs (fingers, toes or digits), amputee (HYPTMLIMB)
  • circulation problems (other than in the legs) (HYPTNLCIRC)
  • other heart condition or disease (HYPTOHART)
  • knee problems (not arthritis, not joint injury) (HYPTOKNEE)
  • polio (myelitis), paralysis, para/quadriplegia (HYPTPOLIO)
  • substance abuse, other than alcohol or tobacco (HYPTSUBST)
  • varicose veins, hemorrhoids (HYPTVEIN)

Sample children only were able to indicate that they used hypnosis to treat:

Both sample adults and sample children were able to indicate that they used hypnosis to treat:

  • Attention Deficit Disorder (HYPTADD)
  • constipation needing medication (HYPTCONST)
  • migraine or severe headache (HYPTMIG)
  • other developmental problem (HYPTODD)
  • other lung or breathing problem (HYPTOLUNG)

The aforementioned variables indicating which conditions respondents treated via hypnosis provide a "yes" or "no" response for each condition. Analysts interested in the conditions that hypnosis was used to treat may wish to consult the following summary variables, as well:

  • condition for which hypnosis was used most (HYPTCONMOST)

  • condition count for hypnosis (HYPCONNO)

Comparability

HYPTREAT is only available for 2007. There is a slight difference in question wording between sample adults and sample children.

In 2007, sample adults were asked, "Did you use hypnosis for a specific health problem or condition?"

By contrast, the question wording for sample children emphasizes that the hypnosis must have occurred within the past 12 months: "During the past 12 months, did [fill: sample child's name] use hypnosis for a specific health problem or condition?"

However, two of the questions for sample adults preceding HYPTREAT (HYPYR and HYPNO) did specify the 12 month time frame. Respondents were only asked the question for HYPTREAT if they indicated in HYPYR that they had seen a practitioner for hypnosis during the past 12 months.
