Description
For sample adults included in the Quality of Life supplement (QOL10FLAG), LACOMDIFEGO indicates whether the person had difficulty communicating (either understanding or being understood) when using their usual language. Possible responses were "no difficulty," "some difficulty," "a lot of difficulty," "cannot do at all/unable to do."
Quality of Life Supplement
The Quality of Life/Functioning and Disability supplement (QOL) was fielded to sample adults, to develop and test improved measures of functioning. According to the 2010 NHIS Survey Description, this element of the survey was "part of a partnership with the Washington Group on Disability Statistics (WG) and the Budapest Initiative on the Measurement of Health State (BI)." Other disability questions developed by the WG and BI groups were included in the NHIS beginning in 2008. More information on the WB and BI efforts are available on the Internet.
In addition to covering communication difficulty, the Quality of Life supplement asked about difficulty with vision, hearing, mobility, self care, learning, cognition, pain, fatigue, and emotions (anxiety and depression). Persons acknowledging difficulty in these areas were asked follow-up questions regarding the degree of difficulty, use of assistive devices, and functioning with assistance.
Related Variables
Persons who acknowledged having difficulty communicating (in LACOMDIFEGO) or in not having their speech understood by others (LACOMDIFOTHS) were asked follow-up questions about the reason for their communication difficulties.
The variables based on these follow-up questions include:
- LACOMDIFASHY (Problem communicating cuz: Talk fast or shy)
- LACOMDIFPHYS (Problem communicating cuz: Physical problem with mouth or tongue)
- LACOMDIFLANG (Problem communicating cuz: Speak other language)
- LACOMDIFHEAR (Problem communicating cuz: Have hearing problem)
