Description
For sample adults who had seen a practitioner for massage during the past 12 months (MASYR) and who had used massage for a specific health problem (MASTREAT), MASCOUN identifies those who had also received counseling for the condition for which they most used massage (MASTCONMOST).
For persons who had received such counseling (i.e., those with a "yes" response in MASCOUN), the complementary variable MASCOUNTIM indicates whether they received such mental health counseling before, at about the same time, or after trying massage.
The survey question for MASCOUN also collected information about the use of other conventional medical treatments (or no conventional treatment) for the condition for which massage was used the most, including:
- Prescription medications (MASPMED)
- Over-the-counter medications (MASNPMED)
- Surgery (MASSURG)
- Physical therapy (MASPT)
- No conventional treatment (MASNOCONV)
Interviewers asked, "Did you receive any of these conventional medical treatments for [condition for which massage was used the most]?" and entered all treatments reported by the respondent.
For more information about the full range of variables related to massage, including definitions, see MASYR.
