Description

For sample adults who had seen a practitioner for massage during the past 12 months (MASYR) and who had used massage for a specific health problem (MASTREAT), MASPT identifies those who had also received physical therapy for the condition for which they most used massage (MASTCONMOST).

For persons who had received such physical therapy (i.e., those with a "yes" response in MASPT), the complementary variable MASPTTIM indicates whether they received such physical therapy before, at about the same time, or after trying massage.

The survey question for MASPT also collected information about the use of other conventional medical treatments (or no conventional treatment) for the condition for which massage was used the most, including:

• Mental health counseling (MASCOUN)

• Prescription medications (MASPMED)

• Over-the-counter medications (MASNPMED)

• Surgery (MASSURG)

• No conventional treatment (MASNOCONV)

Interviewers asked, "Did you receive any of these conventional medical treatments for [condition for which massage was used the most]?" and entered all treatments reported by the respondent.
