Description

For sample adults who had seen a practitioner for a therapeutic movement technique during the past 12 months (MOVALEXYR, MOVFELDYR, MOVPILATYR, or MOVTRAGYR ) and who had used a movement technique for a specific health problem (MOVTREAT), MOVCOUN identifies those who had also received counseling for the condition for which they most used a movement technique (MOVTCONMOST).

For persons who had received such counseling (i.e., those with a "yes" response in MOVCOUN), the complementary variable MOVCOUNTIM indicates whether they received such mental health counseling before, at about the same time, or after trying the movement technique.

The survey question for MOVCOUN also collected information about the use of other conventional medical treatments (or no conventional treatment) for the condition for which the movement technique was used the most, including:

• Prescription medications (MOVPMED)

• Over-the-counter medications (MOVNPMED)

• Surgery (MOVSURG)

• Physical therapy (MOVPT)

• No conventional treatment (MOVNOCONV)

Interviewers asked, "Did you receive any of these conventional medical treatments for [condition for which the movement technique was used the most]?" and entered all treatments reported by the respondent.
