MOVTREAT
Used movement technique for specific health problem

Description

For sample adults age 18+ in 2007, and sample children under 18 in 2007, who had seen a practitioner for movement techniques during the past 12 months (MOVALEXYR, MOVFELDYR, MOVPILATYR, or MOVTRAGYR), MOVTREAT indicates whether movement techniques were used to treat a specific health problem or condition.

This variable is part of the Alternative Health Supplements sponsored by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) and the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS). For information on the purpose of these supplements, along with a list of all modalities of alternative medicine that respondents could report using, see ACUYR. For a discussion of related movement technique use variables and definitions of movement techniques, see MOVALEXYR.

Related Variables

Respondents who indicated that they did in fact use movement techniques to treat a specific health problem or condition were asked follow-up questions, regarding whether movement techniques was combined with conventional treatments.

These include:

  • got no conventional treatment for movement techniques condition (MOVNOCONV )
  • got counseling for movement techniques condition (MOVCOUN)
  • got non-prescription meds for movement techniques condition (MOVNPMED)
  • got prescription meds for movement techniques condition (MOVPMED)
  • got physical therapy for movement techniques condition (MOVPT)
  • got surgery for movement techniques condition (MOVSURG)

Respondents who indicated that they had used movement techniques to treat a specific condition were also asked to identify that condition. There are 116 variables for specific conditions that respondents could indicate were treated with movement techniques: 57 for adults only, 29 for children only, and 30 for both children and adults.

Sample adults only were able to indicate that they used movement techniques to treat:

  • excessive use of alcohol or tobacco (MOVTALCTOB)
  • other nerve damage, including carpal tunnel syndrome (MOVTCTS)
  • joint pain or stiffness/other joint condition (MOVTJNTPAIN)
  • memory loss or loss of other cognitive function (MOVTMEMLOS)
  • missing limbs (fingers, toes or digits), amputee (MOVTMLIMB)
  • circulation problems (other than in the legs) (MOVTNLCIRC)
  • other heart condition or disease (MOVTOHART)
  • knee problems (not arthritis, not joint injury) (MOVTOKNEE)
  • polio (myelitis), paralysis, para/quadriplegia (MOVTPOLIO)
  • substance abuse, other than alcohol or tobacco (MOVTSUBST)
  • varicose veins, hemorrhoids (MOVTVEIN)

Sample children only were able to indicate that they used movement techniques to treat:

Both sample adults and sample children were able to indicate that they used movement techniques to treat:

  • Attention Deficit Disorder (MOVTADD)
  • constipation needing medication (MOVTCONST)
  • migraine or severe headache (MOVTMIG)
  • other developmental problem (MOVTODD)
  • other lung or breathing problem (MOVTOLUNG)

The aforementioned variables indicating which conditions respondents treated via movement techniques provide a "yes" or "no" response for each condition. Analysts interested in the conditions that movement techniques was used to treat may wish to consult the following summary variables, as well:

  • condition for which movement techniques was used most (MOVTCONMOST)

  • condition count for movement techniques (MOVCONNO)

Comparability

MOVTREAT is only available for 2007. There is a slight difference in question wording between sample adults and sample children.

In 2007, sample adults were asked, "Did you use [fill: type of movement technique] for a specific health problem or condition?"

By contrast, the question wording for sample children emphasizes that the movement techniques must have occurred within the past 12 months: "During the past 12 months, did [fill: sample child's name] use [Feldenkreis/ Alexander Technique/ Pilates/ Trager Psychophysical Integration] for a specific health problem or condition?"

However, two of the questions for sample adults preceding MOVTREAT (MOVNO and MOVALEXYR or the comparable variables for other movement techniques MOVFELDYR, MOVPILATYR, or MOVTRAGYR) did specify the 12 month time frame. Respondents were only asked the question for MOVTREAT if they indicated in MOVALEXYR or the other comparable variables that they had seen a practitioner for movement techniques during the past 12 months.
