Description

For sample adults who had seen a practitioner for naturopathy during the past 12 months (NATYR) and who had used naturopathy for a specific health problem (NATTREAT), NATPMED identifies those who had also received prescription medications for the condition for which they most used naturopathy (NATTCONMOST).

For persons who had received such prescription medication (i.e., those with a "yes" response in NATPMED), the complementary variable NATPMEDTIM indicates whether they received such prescription medications before, at about the same time, or after trying naturopathy.

The survey question for NATPMED also collected information about the use of other conventional medical treatments (or no conventional treatment) for the condition for which naturopathy was used the most, including:

• Mental health counseling (NATCOUN)

• Over-the-counter medications (NATNPMED)

• Surgery (NATSURG)

• Physical therapy (NATPT)

• No conventional treatment (NATNOCONV)

Interviewers asked, "Did you receive any of these conventional medical treatments for [condition for which naturopathy was used the most]?" and entered all treatments reported by the respondent.
