Description
For sample adults who had seen a practitioner for naturopathy during the past 12 months (NATYR) and who had used naturopathy for a specific health problem (NATTREAT), NATPT identifies those who had also received physical therapy for the condition for which they most used naturopathy (NATTCONMOST).
For persons who had received such physical therapy (i.e., those with a "yes" response in NATPT), the complementary variable NATPTTIM indicates whether they received such physical therapy before, at about the same time, or after trying naturopathy.
The survey question for NATPT also collected information about the use of other conventional medical treatments (or no conventional treatment) for the condition for which naturopathy was used the most, including:
- Mental health counseling (NATCOUN)
- Prescription medications (NATPMED)
- Over-the-counter medications (NATNPMED)
- Surgery (NATSURG)
- No conventional treatment (NATNOCONV)
Interviewers asked, "Did you receive any of these conventional medical treatments for [condition for which naturopathy was used the most]?" and entered all treatments reported by the respondent.
For more information about the full range of variables related to naturopathy, including definitions, see NATYR.
