NATTREAT
Used naturopathy for specific health problem

Description

For sample adults age 18+ in 2002 and 2007, and sample children under 18 in 2007, who had seen a practitioner for naturopathy during the past 12 months (NATYR), NATTREAT indicates whether naturopathy was used to treat a specific health problem or condition.

This variable is part of the Alternative Health Supplements sponsored by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) and the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS). For information on the purpose of these supplements, along with a list of all modalities of alternative medicine that respondents could report using, see ACUYR. For a discussion of related naturopathy use variables and definitions of naturopathy, see NATYR.

Related Variables

Respondents who indicated that they did in fact use naturopathy to treat a specific health problem or condition were asked several follow-up questions.

These include:

Respondents who indicated that they had used naturopathy to treat a specific condition were also asked to identify that condition. There are 131 variables for specific conditions that respondents could indicate were treated with naturopathy: 72 for adults only, 28 for children only, and 31 for both children and adults.

Sample adults only were able to indicate that they used naturopathy to treat:

  • excessive use of alcohol or tobacco (NATTALCTOB)
  • bowel problems and constipation (NATTBOWL)
  • other nerve damage, including carpal tunnel syndrome (NATTCTS)
  • joint pain or stiffness/other joint condition (NATTJNTPAIN)
  • memory loss or loss of other cognitive function (NATTMEMLOS)
  • missing limbs (fingers, toes or digits), amputee (NATTMLIMB)
  • circulation problems (other than in the legs) (NATTNLCIRC)
  • other heart condition or disease (NATTOHART)
  • knee problems (not arthritis, not joint injury) (NATTOKNEE)
  • polio (myelitis), paralysis, para/quadriplegia (NATTPOLIO)
  • substance abuse, other than alcohol or tobacco (NATTSUBST)
  • varicose veins, hemorrhoids (NATTVEIN)

Sample children only were able to indicate that they used naturopathy to treat:

Both sample adults and sample children were able to indicate that they used naturopathy to treat:

  • Attention Deficit Disorder (NATTADD)
  • constipation needing medication (NATTCONST)
  • migraine or severe headache (NATTMIG)
  • other developmental problem (NATTODD)
  • other lung or breathing problem (NATTOLUNG)

The aforementioned variables indicating which conditions respondents treated via naturopathy provide a "yes" or "no" response for each condition. Analysts interested in the conditions that naturopathy was used to treat may wish to consult the following summary variables, as well:

  • condition for which naturopathy was used most (NATTCONMOST)

  • first condition for which naturopathy was used (NATCON1)
  • degree of help from naturopathy, 1st condition (NATCON1HELP)
  • second condition for which naturopathy was used (NATCON2)
  • degree of help from naturopathy, 2nd condition (NATCON2HELP)
  • third condition for which naturopathy was used (NATCON3)
  • degree of help from naturopathy, 3rd condition (NATCON3HELP)
  • condition count for naturopathy (NATCONNO)

Comparability

The question wording of NATTREAT for sample adults changed slightly from 2002 to 2007.

In 2002, they were asked, "Did you use naturopathy to treat a specific health problem or condition?"

In 2007, they were asked, "Did you use naturopathy for a specific health problem or condition?"

The question wording for sample children emphasizes that the massage must have occurred within the past 12 months.

For sample children, interviewers asked, "During the past 12 months, did [fill: sample child's name] use naturopathy for a specific health problem or condition?" However, two of the questions for sample adults preceding NATTREAT in both 2002 and 2007 (NATYR and NATNO) did specify the 12 month time frame. Respondents were only asked the question for NATTREAT if they indicated in NATYR that they had seen a practitioner for naturopathy during the past 12 months.
