Description

For sample adults, PANICCDC reports results for a summary measure that allows researchers to calculate the likelihood a respondent met the diagnostic criteria (i.e., psychiatric caseness) for panic attack. PANICCDC is an IHIS-created variable that summarizes responses given to the series of questions making up the NHIS version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview - Short Form (CIDI-SF) for panic attack.

Scoring Probable Cases of Panic Attack

As explained in greater detail in the variable description for PANICYR, the CIDI-SF instrument for panic attack began with a series of screening questions that determined whether respondents qualified for a second round of questioning on panic attack symptoms. With the NHIS version of the instrument, persons who had at least one panic attack in the past 12 months that occurred in a non-life-threatening situation and when they were neither in danger nor the center of attention were asked about six panic attack symptoms. Respondents who passed the all filter questions received one point in PANICCDC for each panic attack symptom they endorsed. Those who did not pass all the filter questions, and those who did pass the filters but endorsed none of the symptoms, received a score of 0 in PANICCDC. Apart from the value of 9 for persons not asked these questions, PANICCDC has a value ranging from 0 to 6, with a score of 3 or more indicating a probable case for panic attack.
