SKBEST
Best thing to do for a stroke victim

Description

For sample adults, SKBEST reports responses to a question about the best thing to do if they thought someone was having a stroke. Respondents selected an answer from the following choices on a flashcard:

  • 1. Advise them to go to the hospital.
  • 2. Advise them to call their physician.
  • 3. Call 9-1-1 (or another emergency number)
  • 4. Call spouse or family member
  • 5. Other

The 2006 and 2009 Field Representative's Manuals defined a stroke as "a cerebral hemorrhage or embolism of the cerebral blood vessels." This definition was not routinely shared with respondents.

Rationale for Inquiry

The 2006 Field Representative's Manual provided the following information about this inquiry:

The sponsor for this supplement question is the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), which is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This [Sample Adult Stroke] supplement consists of one question, which is similar to a question on heart attacks asked in 2001. It is included in the 2006 Sample Adult Questionnaire to collect data on the Healthy People 2010 Objectives. These objectives provide continuous measurement throughout the decade of progress toward the goals of health promotion and disease prevention. The specific purpose of the stroke question is to gauge recognition of stroke as an emergency and to collect the respondent's views on the BEST action to take in this kind of situation.

Related Variables

In 2009, six questions gauging the respondent's knowledge of stroke symptoms preceded the single question for SKBEST. NINDS was once again the sponsor of the Adult Stroke supplement, and the purpose of the inquiry inquiry was again "to collect data on the Healthy People 2010 Objectives," according to the 2009 Manual.

Comparability

SKBEST is comparable for 2006 and 2009.
