SPRAFLUAGOYR
Year of most recent flu nasal vaccine

Description

For sample adults and sample children who had a nasal flu vaccine in the past 12 months (SPRAYFLUYR), SPRAFLUAGOYR reports the year of their most recent nasal flu vaccine. Interviewers asked, "During what month and year did [you/sample child] receive [your/his/her] most recent flu nasal spray?" SPRAFLUAGOYR reports the calendar year of the most recent nasal flu spray vaccine. The complementary variable SPRAYFLUYRMO reports the month of the most recent flu nasal spray.

Rationale for Inquiry and Data Editing

According to the Field Representative's Manual for 2005 forward, if a respondent gave a date prior to 12 months ago for their most recent nasal flu vaccine, the interviewer was prompted to verify if the date given was correct. If the respondent confirmed that the date was prior to 12 months ago, the interviewer was to change the respondent's answer from "yes" to "no" for SPRAYFLUYR (and the individual became defined as "not in universe" for SPRAFLUAGOYR and SPRAYFLUYRMO). Thus, one rationale for asking about the date of the most recent flu nasal spray was to check whether respondents used the appropriate reference period in their responses to SPRAYFLUYR.

Related Variables

Along with collecting information about the nasal flu vaccine, the survey collected information on whether sample adults and sample children had a flu shot in the past year (SHOTFLUYR) and, if so, the month and year of their most recent flu shot (SHOTFLUYRMO and SHOTFLUAGOYR).

The Manual text about the inquiry into the date of the most recent flu shot suggests another rationale for asking about the timing of both forms of flu vaccination: "This helps determine [whether] for this flu season or last year."

Comparability

SPRAFLUAGOYR consistently indicates whether the nasal flu vaccine was received during the calendar year of the survey, or during an adjacent calendar year. Because the calendar year of the survey changes over time, so too do the values for SPRAFLUAGOYR (e.g., beginning with 2004 for the 2005 survey, beginning with 2005 for the 2006 survey).

In 2009, the following introduction was added to the survey question for SHOTFLUYR, to direct respondents to distinguish between regular flu vaccinations and H1N1 vaccinations: "The next questions are about seasonal or regular flu vaccination. Please do not include H1N1 or swine flu vaccination." While the addition of this statement technically changes the wording of the question, including this text makes the 2009 results on flu vaccination more comparable to the results for earlier years than would otherwise be the case.
