PRATPARK
Used prayer for: Parkinson's disease

Description

For sample adults age 18+ in 2002 who had a healing ritual or sacrament performed for their own health or treatment in the past 12 months (PRARITYR) and had used healing rituals/sacraments to treat a specific health problem or condition (PRATREAT), PRATPARK indicates whether the person had used healing rituals/sacraments to treat Parkinson's disease.

Related Variables

Parkinson's disease was one of 74 possible specific conditions that sample adults (but not sample children) could report treating with healing rituals/sacraments.

The other such conditions are:

  • arthritis, lupus or fibromyalgia (PRATARTHLF, 2002 only)
  • bowel problems or constipation (PRATBOWL, 2002 only)
  • head or chest cold (PRATCOLD, 2002 only)

  • other nerve damage, including carpal tunnel syndrome (PRATCTS, 2002 only)
  • benign tumors or cysts (PRATCYST, 2002 only)

  • osteoporosis, tendinitis (PRATOSTEO, 2002 only)
  • polio (myelitis), paralysis, para/quadriplegia (PRATPOLIO, 2002 only)
  • prostate trouble or impotence (PRATPROST, 2002 only)
  • mental retardation (PRATRET, 2002 only)
  • skin problems--adults (PRATSKINA, 2002 only)
  • varicose veins, hemorrhoids (PRATVEIN, 2002 only)

Sample adults could report treating Parkinson's disease by 14 of the 16 alternative health modalities, including healing rituals. The omitted alternative treatments are hypnosis and movement techniques, which were included as treatments for specific health problems in the 2007 survey only; however, Parkinson's disease was not a specific condition recognized in 2007. (See HYPYR and MOVALEXYR for more information about the treatment of specific conditions by hypnosis and movement techniques.) Analysts interested in the treatment of Parkinson's disease by alternative therapies other than healing rituals/sacraments should see PRARITYR for the full list of alternative medicine treatments, as well as for a summary of other healing ritual-related questions and definitions.

Comparability

PRATPARK is only available for 2002. Survey participants were not asked about using healing rituals/sacraments to treat most specific health conditions in 2007, and Parkinson's disease was not a condition covered by the CAM supplement in 2007.
